This past weekend was a special one for our family as my boys competed in the 2026 Metro NY 8U Swimming Championship. Watching young athletes step up to the blocks and give their best effort is always exciting, but it’s even more meaningful when it’s your own children diving into the water.

For my older son, this was his second year competing in the Metro NY Championship, and he participated in seven individual events. What made the experience even more rewarding was seeing him improve in every single one. At just seven years old, the competition was fierce—many races were decided by only fractions of a second. It was a reminder of how much dedication and effort these young swimmers put into their sport.

This year was also a big milestone for my younger son. At five years old, it was his first time trying the championship meet, and watching him experience the excitement of a large swim competition for the first time was unforgettable.

But as parents, the biggest reward isn’t just the race times or results. What truly makes us proud is seeing their love for swimming continue to grow. The determination, the teamwork, and the confidence they build through sports are far more valuable than any medal.

Youth Sports Are About More Than Winning

Competitive sports at a young age teach children lessons that go far beyond the pool.

They learn perseverance, pushing through tough practices and challenging races. They learn discipline, showing up consistently and giving their best effort. And perhaps most importantly, they develop a genuine passion for something they love.

Watching my boys swim in the Metro NY youth swimming championship reminded me that these experiences are shaping who they will become—not just as athletes, but as people.

The Power of Great Coaches

A huge thank you goes to the amazing coaches at Westchester Aquatic Club (Westchester Wolverines).

Their dedication to youth swimmer development goes far beyond teaching technique. They support the kids emotionally, encourage them to grow, and help build a positive environment where young swimmers can thrive.

It’s incredible to see how thoughtful coaching can make such a difference in a child’s athletic journey.

Enjoying the Journey

Sports can sometimes feel competitive and intense, especially in events where every race comes down to a few tenths of a second. But moments like these remind us why our kids started swimming in the first place—because they love being in the water.

As parents, the best thing we can do is celebrate the effort, support their growth, and enjoy the journey alongside them.

Seeing them swim with excitement, determination, and joy makes every early morning practice and weekend meet worth it.

Here’s to many more races, many more memories, and watching them continue to grow—both in and out of the pool.

Celebrating Youth Sports & Childhood Moments

As both a mom and a lifestyle photographer based in Westchester, moments like these remind me how quickly childhood passes. Sports seasons, competitions, and milestones are fleeting—but the memories they create last a lifetime.

Whether it’s swim meets, youth sports, or everyday family moments, these chapters of childhood deserve to be remembered.
